Christian Missionaries in India |

"What is Hinduism but Devil worship, ultimately?"
Pat Robertson, President of the Christian Coalition, on "The 700 Club", January 7, 1991

Such views are not rare utterances from ignorant and narrow-minded individuals, but are prevalent in all the Christian missionary organizations around the world. The fact that a well-known and (presumably) educated personality such as Mr. Robertson expressed such intolerant views about the world's most ancient religion on national television in the United States proves what Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, and Pagans have known for centuries, that Christianity is a proselytizing ideology that seeks to exterminate all other religious beliefs from the face of the Earth. Christianity has long had the reputation of being the most perverse missionary religion in human history. From when it was founded in the 2nd Century A.D. to today, Christian missionaries have created havoc all around the world. They have annihilated entire races of peoples and destroyed ancient civilizations, such as the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs of Central and South America, only to prove their religious zeal and loyalty to their jealous god. The missionaries claimed that they were "saving" souls, when in actuality they were propagating an intolerant and narrow-minded ideology across the globe. I need not delve into details about the activities of the Christian missionaries around the world in the past. Their actions in Africa, the Americas, and South Asia continue to shock the modern enlightened people and explicitly demonstrate the dark side of mankind. The purpose of this particular page is to inform the readers of the Christian missionary activities continuing in India today. |

Their Purpose |

"When the missionaries arrived, the Africans had the land and the missionaries had the Bible. They taught us to pray with our eyes closed. When we opened them, they had the land and we had the Bible."
Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first elected Prime Minister (1963-1964) and President (1964-1978)

In this age of science and reason, it is hard for any enlightened and educated being to find any logical thought emanating from the dead and obsolete ideology of Christianity. A majority of people in the Western countries has realized the inadequacy and shallowness of the Christian religion in fulfilling their spiritual needs or explaining the workings of the Universe. We must remember that it was only when the dogmatic grip of the Christian Church on the people of Europe was loosened that tremendous scientific inventions and discoveries began to appear. And ever since that European Renaissance (which was inspired by the Greek Pagan art, literature, and philosophy), the power and influence of Christianity in the West has been waning. Realizing this increasing phenomenon, the Christian leaders prepared to make up for this decrease in the population of faithful Christians by converting the people of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. And this trend continues to today. But the main reason why Christian missionaries are so obsessed with "saving souls" of non-Christians is their belief that there is only one God, only one Prophet, and only one Book to which all humans must submit themselves unconditionally and blindly. Their doctrine of blind faith and absolute submission is obvious from their references to Hell and the mythical being called Satan. Christians are expected to believe blindly in whatever the Bible says and promptly condemned to eternal damnation in Hell when they even try to question the validity or logic of the Christian teachings. This serves a very important purpose: as long as no one tries to question the validity of their scriptures, the teachings of their prophet, and the authority of the Church, they remain in control of the minds, bodies, and wealth of the followers. This leads us to the most important reason for the unrelenting interest of Christian missionaries in conversion: Politics. Christianity has always been as much a political force as a religious one. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the Church enjoyed absolute authority and power, and abused their privileges to commit horrendous crimes against humanity (such as the Spanish Inquisition). Christianity being an organized religion, has certain rules and laws of its own that its adherents must obey. It also endows the Christian clergy with certain political privileges that can easily be exploited for personal gain. For example, the clergy of the Catholic Church in the Vatican enjoy many luxuries due to their political and economic influences over the common Catholic masses. They live a life of luxury at the expense of the many millions of poor Catholics in Central and South America and other places who regularly pay their tributes and donations to the Church. And yet, the Christian missionaries are not satisfied with the present population of Christians. They want to convert the whole world to Christianity so that they can establish a "Kingdom of God" where the Christian clergy would have absolute power over the minds, souls, and wealth of the people. Power is just as much addictive and intoxicating as money, if not more. Christian missionaries have been present in India since the first invasions of India by the Portuguese, French, Spanish, and British. In fact, one of the reasons for the initial invasions was to convert the "Heathen" Indians to Christianity. In Goa, a Western Indian state, the Portuguese inflicted horrific atrocities on the Hindus to separate them from their glorious religion and culture. The Portuguese missionaries tortured men, women, and children of all ages behind closed doors of their churches. These events occured in a period that has been refered to as the Goa Inquisition (with the obvious allusion to the Spanish Inquisition that was going on in Europe at the same time). In other parts of India which were under British control, the conversion tactics were less severe but devastating nevertheless. The British opted for more subtle ways to Christianize the Indians. They forced the Hindus to learn English and read British books or books written by non-Indian authors in schools and colleges. This may not seem to be an attack on Hindu culture and religion at first glance. But the fact of the matter is, the education system introduced by the British in India, which still persists today, has done more harm to Hinduism than any invasion ever could. Thomas Babington Macaulay, appointed to a position in the Supreme Council of India in 1834, initiated the modern education system of India in 1835. In his famous "Minute on Indian Education," he explained quiet clearly the intent of the British in teaching the Indians English instead of their own native languages: |
|
|
"It is possible to make natives of this country thoroughly good English scholars, and that to this end our efforts ought to be directed. It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect. To that class we may leave it to refine the vernacular dialects of the country, to enrich those dialects with terms of science borrowed from the Western nomenclature, and to render them by degrees fit vehicles for conveying knowledge to the great mass of the population." (The full speech can be found at: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~raley/research/english/macaulay.html) |
|
In short, the British wanted to make a class of "brown sahibs," Indians who hated their own culture, religion, and race; Indians who would look at their country and religion through Western eyes; Indians who would continue the task of exterminating whatever was left of the Hindu culture and religion after a millennium of invasions. |

"These self-alienated people behaved exactly as had been anticipated by Macaulay and his cohorts .... Their highest spiritual aspiration was a mechanical monotheism and a way of worship borrowed from the christian church. Their highest cultural aspiration was to dress, dine, dance, and decorate their drawing rooms after the fashion of their British masters. Their highest social aspiration was a self-centered and acquisitive individualism which frowned at every bit of the traditional social fabric. And their highest political aspiration was a self-governing Dominion within the British empire," said Sita Ram Goel. (Muslim Separatism: Causes and Consequences, Sita Ram Goel, New Delhi, Voice of India, 1983. Page 71). |

Today, these "Macaulay's children" control many educational institutions and the mainstream media in India, and use their socio-economic privileges to degrade Hinduism, ridicule Hindu culture, and ferociously negate authentic Hindu history. Thus, the British plan not only achieved success in its most immediate effects, but also proved to become a lasting legacy of the British Raj in India. Today, the Europeans have been expelled from Bharat, but the missionaries have remained. Their objectives are still the same: saving souls, planting churches, reaping harvests of people, and establishing Christendom. Only their methods of going about it have changed. |

Their Tactics |
|
"The object of all missionary labor should not be primarily the civilization, but the evangelization of the heathen ... schools may be regarded as converting agencies and their value estimated by the number who are led to renounce idolatry and make an open profession to Christianity." The South Indian Missionary Conference of 1858

The Christian missionaries of yore used violence and force to achieve their ends, but since India's independence, they have unfortunately not been able to enjoy such leisurely activities. Instead, they have chosen more subtle and covert means to convert the Heathens of India. They have opened schools for the poor to show the world that they are philanthropists and social workers. But these schools are not only places to gain education, but also a factory of missionary machinery that turns the Heathens into Christians and, even worse, self-loathing Hindus. As I mentioned before, the education system of India is already doing a commendable job destroying whatever is left of India's heritage. The missionary-run schools only benefit from the self-hating secular education institution of India. Here are a few tactics they use in their schools and colleges to achieve their goal: Hinduism is deliberately degraded and ridiculed in front of students by the school teachers and administrators; elementary school children, regardless of their religion, are forced to sing Christian songs praising their god, Jesus Christ, and other Christian personalities; books written and published by Hindu-bashers, Christians, and Communists are used extensively, even in the secular studies such as history. Some Christian missionary organizations have also built hospitals in order to deceive the gullible Hindus of their sinister designs. It has been reported on many occasions that Christian doctors and administrators of these hospitals demand that Hindus convert to Christianity before they are given "free" health care. One such incident occurred in November of 2000:
"On November 9, 2000 it was discovered that seventeen poor Hindus had been blinded in one eye after operations in Orissa. They had all undergone surgery at the Serang Christian Eye Hospital at Serang in Gajapati district of Orissa in August last year. The Serang Christian Eye Hospital was set up in the Gumma block of Gajapati district by the Baptists of Canada to supposedly provide health care to tribals. The hospital is run by the Council of Christian Hospitals, which has its head office in Bangalore. The poorest of the tribals are misled into receiving free treatment at this hospital in exchange for their souls. The victims are operated upon then pressurized to convert to Christianity, or else told that they will have to cough up the payment for the operations." Ramnarayan Gopalkrishnan - "Acts of Religious Terrorism by Christian Fundamentalists in India"
The poor, uneducated Hindus are unable to see through the veil of this "social work" of the Christian missionaries, and often have to succumb to their tactics to receive medical care, education, food, clothing, and other goods. This is one of the main reasons why the missionaries have been so successful in not only India, but other parts of the world as well: They have the financial means to bribe and deceive the poor, illiterate non-Christian masses with the promises of food, clothing, education, and medical care in return for conversion to Christianity. The Hindus, who have been looted, plundered, and drained dry by centuries of foreign invasions and conquest, simply do not have the financial resources to compete with the Christian missionary organizations in the field of social work. It is also important to note that Christian missionaries specifically target remote, isolated villages in India, especially in the North-eastern states, for implementing their methods of uprooting the ancient, indigenous civilization, culture, and religion of the land to replace with their own. The majority of Christian organizations in India operate in the North-eastern states precisely because they are isolated and removed from the rest of the country. The "seven sisters" states of North-east India, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, are connected to mainland India by a small tract of land that lies between Nepal, China, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. The missionaries have been attempting to convert the peoples of these states for decades, but without much success. The tribal Hindus had done well for a while keeping the missionaries at bay. But recently, in the past two decades, insurgency groups have been popping up in these states. The militants belonging to these groups started attacking innocent civilians and causing wide-spread fear and confusion. Recently, it was discovered that many of these insurgency groups had actually been started by missionaries! Many of these groups are hard-line Christian organizations whose goal is to Christianize the Hindu tribals and then separate from the rest of India (because of the Hindu majority). The missionaries have not only been lending these militants moral support and encouragement, but also been providing them with financial assistance and supplying them with weapons and training. Nagmanlal Halam, the secretary of the Noapara Baptist Church in Tripura, in April, 2000, confessed to buying and supplying explosives to the National Liberation Front of Tripura, or NLFT, one of the most active terrorist organizations in the entire North-east. Hindu and Buddhist temples, homes, and people have been repeatedly attacked by these Christian terrorists who have publicly proclaimed that one of their goals is to convert every Heathen to Christianity. Thus, Christian missionaries have resorted back to using violence to achieve their ends because they have failed miserably in trying to persuade Hindus to convert peacefully. |
