History:

Sewa Bharati was established in 1979. It has fast emerged as the largest non-governmental organisation in Delhi working in the slums and shantytowns. Out of an estimated 5.5 million of Delhi's 120 million population living in slums, shantytowns and unathorised and resettlement colonies, Sewa Bharti provides succour to over 3.5 million people through a wide network of more than 1,400 projects.

These projects, targetting the economically weaker and socially neglected sections of our society range from medical assistance, creche, library, hostel, basic education, adult education, vocational and industrial training, upliftment of street children and the lepers in the capital. All the services are offered free. Through these projects Sewa Bharti aims at making the underprivileged sections of the society self-reliant in every aspect of their lives. The ultimate objective is to establish a casteless and classless society through service of the underprivileged class.

Sewa Bharti has successfully created an atmosphere of 'samrasta'(social harmony) in these slums and shantytowns through its various educational training, cultural and religious projects including 'Bhaj an-Kirtan', annual Bharat Mata Pujan (worshiping Mother India) and 'yajnas'. Influential and prosperous sections of society also actively participate in these programmes. Less to say, results speak of the works done by Sewa Bharti in the capital. Health and sanitation facilities in many of the slums adopted by Sewa Bharti have improved drastically. Thousands of unskilled and unemployed youth have now become self-reliant through the education of vocational and industrial training institutes run by Sewa Bharti.

Sewa Bharti, with its motto "NAR SEWA NARAYAN SEWA" (service of mankind is service of God). Has succeeded in including in these people a sense of national pride moral esteem and humanitarian values. The Delhi Government in recognition of the outstanding services rendered in the field of child welfare, gave awards to Sewa Bharti in the years 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1998. Future plans of Sewa Bharti include : computer training, motor driving training, mobile coaching center and a pathological laboratory.
